Activated by Prayer

Written by Boyd Bailey

Divine initiatives need divine instruction.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 14, 2026

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13:2-3

Prayer is essential before serving in the power of the Holy Spirit. Acts 13 highlights a pivotal moment in Christian history. The event was when a local movement expanded into a global mission. The church in Antioch, that lively, multi-ethnic center where believers were first called “Christians,” becomes the launchpad for something remarkable. The leaders: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen, and Saul weren’t planning or brainstorming their next steps. Instead, they were worshiping and fasting. These were not quick prayers squeezed in between meetings but sustained, intentional acts of consecration. They earnestly sought God’s face, convinced that the direction of their ministry must come from divine revelation, not clever human ambition.

Then the Holy Spirit spoke: “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Notice the clarity. Not vague impressions or subtle nudges, but clear instruction: who goes, what they’ll do, who sends them. Divine answer to Spirit-led prayer. The leaders’ response? Immediate obedience. More fasting. More prayer to confirm the call. They laid hands in blessing and commissioning. Then they sent them off—prayer-activated action.

This launched Paul’s first missionary journey, taking the gospel beyond Jewish borders into Cyprus and Asia Minor. The most important strategic move in early church history. Here’s the lesson: major actions need divine guidance. Before making big moves, seek God’s face through worship, fasting, and prayer. Wait for His clarity. Then obey immediately. The early church understood something we’ve forgotten: that divine initiatives need divine instruction. Strategy without seeking the Lord is activity without anointing. But desperate prayer ignites a world-changing mission. Where is the Lord leading you that requires an extended time of prayer?

A new friend recently visited the office to discuss his career change. Thankfully, his wise and loving wife gifted him a mini sabbatical to rest and seek God’s next calling to serve in His Kingdom. What a blessing, a gift of no pressure, trust in the Lord’s provision, and space to heal and grow into the best version of himself. It must bring our heavenly Father great joy when we turn transitions into opportunities for abiding instead of striving, and when we invest in the most meaningful relationships that busyness may have caused us to neglect. Through his prayerful process of discernment, his peace and joy also brought peace and joy to others… a true God gift! We recently talked, and his praying and waiting opened a door to the Lord’s very best service.

What are you facing in life that invites you to pray and wait on the Lord’s very best for you? What decision looms large, demanding clarity you don’t possess? What relationship strains under weight you can’t lift alone? What dream sits dormant, waiting for divine timing rather than forced effort? What fear whispers lies you need God’s truth to silence? Stop strategizing. Start seeking. The Holy Spirit speaks specifically to those who wait desperately. Your breakthrough isn’t found in frantic activity but in faithful worship, intentional fasting, and patient prayer. God’s best comes to those who refuse to settle for their own but invite others into their prayerful process of discernment. Like the early church: pray, fast, and worship in the Spirit’s power.

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly” (Acts 4:31).

Prayer

Father, as I pray, fill me with Your Spirit’s power. Let my worship activate wisdom, courage, and direction. Move me from my knees into bold obedience and necessary action for Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
