Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 11, 2026
The joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10b
Who comes to your mind when you think of a strong person? The first person I think of is a gentleman from the church I grew up in who was universally known for his strength. A true outdoorsman, Mike led regular hiking and camping expeditions for dads and sons, but his full-time job was working with convicted boys at a local youth detention center. I shiver to think of the weight Mike took upon his shoulders each day as he came alongside those boys, entered into their deeply broken stories, and offered a shoulder to help them pursue a better road. He was undeniably a man of uncommon strength, but he was also known for his joy. Mike’s countenance veritably shone with the joy of the Lord, and I believe it was no coincidence that he was known for both joy and strength. His joy fed his strength like fuel feeds a fire.
When Nehemiah pronounced to the Israelites, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (v.10), he was speaking to a broken people. After the Levites read aloud the Law of Moses, the people recognized how far they had fallen short of God’s commands. The words acted as a mirror held up for them to behold their tarnished reflections, and the result was, rightly, mourning. Yet Nehemiah interrupted their grieving and told them instead to rejoice and celebrate! The people’s sin was real, and the guilt appropriate, but Nehemiah wisely recognized that wallowing in their failures would not inspire God’s people to newness of life. What would? Joy. Not some happy-clappy-evasion-of-the-truth kind of joy. But real joy based upon a truth as powerful and secure as the city walls that protected the people from their enemies. Yes, they had failed, but God had remained faithful to them. His love and commitment to his people stood firm, and he would redeem them. When and only when the people could take refuge in that knowledge, their repentance would be genuine and lasting. Their joy in the Lord would be their identity, their strong tower where they could never be shaken.
When I think about Mike and other notably strong people I’ve known, I see a common thread of joy that is so much more than a positive outlook or a happy disposition. Those who possess true joy in the Lord founded upon his rock-solid faithfulness and redemptive grace become unstoppable in doing good. May we all find our strength in a joy like that.
Prayer
Almighty Father, thank you for redeeming my life. May I find my joy in your faithfulness and grow in that joy so that it becomes the living source of strength in my life. To your glory. Amen.
Application
When tempted to wallow in your own shortcomings, read Nehemiah 8 and take the command given to the Israelites personally. Enumerate the ways God has been faithful to you and rejoice in them. Celebrate his mercy and goodness in your life.
