“Gratitude is not simply an emotion, it’s a choice, an act of worship, and a declaration that God is good even when life is hard.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 9, 2025
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
As November arrives, many of us turn our thoughts toward Thanksgiving. We gather around tables, prepare meals, and share moments with family and friends. It’s a season that naturally draws our attention to gratitude. But as followers of Christ, thankfulness is not meant to be just a holiday theme, it’s meant to be a way of life.
True gratitude flows not from our circumstances but from our relationship with God. Left to ourselves, it’s easy to measure thankfulness by what’s going right. A full pantry, a healthy family, or a season of peace all stir up gratitude. But what about the moments when life feels empty, uncertain, or painful? Scripture reminds us that we are called to “give thanks in all circumstances.” That doesn’t mean we give thanks for everything, but we give thanks in everything because God is always with us.
Maintaining a grateful heart is deeply tied to trust. When we remember that God is sovereign, that He works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28), we begin to see life through the lens of faith rather than fear. Gratitude is not simply an emotion, it’s a choice, an act of worship, and a declaration that God is good even when life is hard.
This November, as you plan meals and write grocery lists, take time to also list the blessings God has poured into your life. Large or small, ordinary or extraordinary, each is a reminder of His faithfulness. A warm sunrise, a word of encouragement, or even the strength to make it through another day. These are gifts worthy of thanks.
When we nurture a relationship with God through prayer, worship, and His Word, our hearts become anchored in gratitude. We learn to recognize His hand in both the highs and the lows. And as we do, we discover that a grateful spirit not only brings joy to our own hearts but also reflects His light to the world around us.
“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:29).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the countless blessings You give, both seen and unseen. Teach me to live each day with a grateful heart, not because of perfect circumstances, but because of Your perfect presence in my life. May my thankfulness draw me closer to You and shine as a witness of Your goodness to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
Take a moment and write down five things that God has blessed your life with, then thank him for it.
