“The Lord’s mercy is a feast for the contrite spirit.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 14, 2025
Let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:7b
Those two words at the end of Isaiah’s proclamation – abundantly pardon – are they not the very heart of God revealed by Jesus in his parable of the lost son in Luke 15? God’s pardon is never stingy, never conditional, never given with a scowling face or a list of duties to be performed in recompense. Oh no. It is lavish! How he hurries to place a robe on our backs, a ring on our finger, to prepare the fattened calf. He throws a feast and calls us guests of honour whilst striking up the chorus of his rejoicing angels. What a father! Who wouldn’t turn to Him and seek his pardon?
And yet, how hard we often find it to accept the lavish gifts of grace our Father prepares for us. We can easily slip into the posture of the second son in Jesus’ parable who, though possessing all his father’s riches at his very fingertips, never takes hold and enjoys them because his mindset is one of earning a wage rather than of receiving a gift.
Repentance ought to be a part of every Christian’s daily life, but what we do after we’ve repented is as important as the act itself. Will we reject the grace and healing offered to us in abundance and go on striving to prove ourselves through our own deeds, our own best efforts at goodness? Or will we come into the Father’s house, sit down at the feast laid out lovingly before us, taste the abundant pardon and goodness of God, and be healed?
Prayer
Abba Father, give me a contrite and humble spirit, so that when I fail you, I quickly repent. But also, give me increased assurance of your abundant pardon. Out of the gratitude of my renewed soul, may I be transformed to the likeness of your Son. Amen.
Application
Never hesitate to come to the Father for forgiveness. His abundant pardon is waiting for you.
