Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 31, 2016
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:5; NLT
I bet there are days when you are standing. You are standing in the confidence of God’s love for you. You are standing on the truth that you have been adopted by God (Ephesians 1:5), that you are His child, and that nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38-29) You are standing in the confidence of your redemption, salvation (Romans 10:9), and unchanging favor with the Almighty because you belong to Him. Then something happens and your confidence gets toppled by condemnation. Toppled when you remember the horrible things you did in the past. Toppled when you think about some unholy attitude in the present. Toppled when you wonder if God will accept you in the future.
During these times when confidence is toppled by condemnation, it’s important to remember one thing: It’s not about what you have done—and what you do—for God. It’s about what He has done for you. Because of His sacrifice on the cross and the unbreakable covenant He made, if He is your Lord and Savior, you can always stand on the truth that His love and favor for you are unchanging. His covenant guarantees it. It cannot be altered. You are His daughter. You are His son. And for Christ’s children, the news is overwhelmingly good.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. . .” (Romans 8:1)
There is no condemnation about your past. There is no condemnation in your present. There is no condemnation in your future.
You are God’s and because you are His, He may convict you; He may discipline you; He may rebuke you, but He will never condemn you, no matter what you have done, what you do, or what you will do. What liberating news! When your inner voice tells you that you are blowing it and that you deserve to be condemned, stand on Christ’s covenant. When your Adversary accuses you and tells you that you deserve everything you get, stand on Christ’s covenant. When others accuse you and tell you God will not forgive you, stand on Christ’s covenant. You are His daughter. You are His son. “…there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”
What marvelous news that His favor cannot be changed. His sacrifice on the cross guarantees it for His children.
Prayer
Lord, I can’t express the comfort I have knowing that in you I am accepted, not because of what I have done, but because of the work you did on the cross. How marvelous it is to know that there is no condemnation for me. I can always count on your love and favor. Help me to live in light of this truth. Amen.Application
Confess your sins to the Lord, then thank Him that they are covered by His unchanging covenant of forgiveness and grace guaranteed by the cross.Related Reading

Shana’s prayer at the end of the devotional was a prayer we all need to pray (speaking for myself here…).
