You Are Who He Says You Are

Written by Shana Schutte

You are who He says you are!”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 4, 2023

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. 1 John 3:1

This middle-aged woman recently had a moment when she thought to herself, Wow, girl! You’ve still got it going on!

Here’s what happened.

After visiting my mom for Mother’s Day in Idaho, it was time to fly from Boise, Idaho back home to Denver, Colorado. Shortly after I found my gate, I decided to grab some water and a snack. So, I started across the hall to a kiosk. As I headed that way, a middle-aged man called out, “Miss, you lost something!” and pointed to a piece of paper on the floor that I had dropped from my wallet.

I called back and smiled, “Thank you! I bet that was something important!”

As I continued to walk toward the kiosk, I thought, That guy called me ‘Miss’! This middle-aged woman still has it going on! I giggled to myself. I found a snack and drink and placed both on the kiosk counter. Just then, the young, 20-ish-looking woman behind the register asked, “Ma’am, will that be cash or card?” Immediately, I noticed how she addressed me.

She called me ma’am! Isn’t ma’am something people call older women? So much for having it “going on!” I laughed to myself, and I thought, Some people will see you one way. Others will see you another. But it doesn’t really matter what others think. What really matters is how God sees you!

Yes. How God sees you. His perception of you—and me—never changes because it is firmly rooted in the God-given identity that’s been granted to us as children of God. Because your identity is found in Christ, that means it cannot be found in another person, not even in those who love you most—and you cannot find it in yourself either! In fact, sometimes we are our worst enemies. That’s why you must look to Christ for your identity.

Knowing your true identity is so important because the way you see yourself will influence every area of your life. Your identity determines if you will be joy-filled or miserable, hopeful, or full of despair, and if God is able to use you for His plans and priorities.

Satan is constantly at work as the Accuser to use the opinions of others, painful experiences, and even the media to convince you that your identity is a false one, not given by Jesus. But you know the truth. You are a child of God, and nothing can change that!

Here are just a few things He says about you. You are:

Beloved (Jeremiah 31:3)
A Child of God (1 John 3:1)
Delighted In (Zephaniah 3:17)
Forgiven (1 Peter 2:24)
Washed Clean (Isaiah 1:18)
Free (Galatians 5:1)
A Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Adopted Into God’s Family (Romans 8:15)
A Co-Heir with Christ (Romans 8:17)
A Sweet Aroma (2 Corinthians 2:15)
Never Alone (Deuteronomy 31:8)
A Masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10)
Wonderfully Made (Psalm 139:14)
Bold (2 Corinthians 3:12)

Such great news! The key to walking in victory in life is to embrace who you truly are. Be encouraged today! You are victorious in Him. You are who He says you are!

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20, ESV)

Prayer

Lord, how I praise you that my identity is in you and that will never change. Because I belong to you, I can live life with hope, joy, and peace. Thank you so much, Lord. Amen.

Application

Choose a few of the things that are true about you from the above list and look up the scriptures. Then thank the Lord that your identity is in Him.
