“Take an inventory of your loves and align them with the love of Jesus Christ.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 1, 2025
Jesus replied, “Marriage is for people here on earth. But in the age to come, those worthy of being raised from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage. And they will never die again. In this respect they will be like angels. They are children of God and children of the resurrection.” Luke 20:34-36, NLT
Jesus explains that marriage is a lasting covenant on earth but only temporary in heaven, as a marriage filled with God’s love is fulfilled eternally through the union of Christ and His church. So, what should we expect from relationships here on earth, dear and cherished by us, filled with the Lord’s love? Will we recognize our loved ones in heaven? C.S. Lewis discusses whether we will know each other in heaven: “Theologians have sometimes asked whether we shall ‘know one another’ in Heaven, and whether the particular love-relations worked out on earth would then continue to have any significance. It seems reasonable to reply: ‘It may depend on what kind of love it had become, or was becoming, on earth.” Lewis emphasizes that when God’s love is the foundation of our relationships, our closeness is built on an eternal bond. Those we love with an eternal perspective are the ones we will know and recognize, seeing them like angels!
Another reason the greatest command from God is love, is that, on earth, we elevate earthly loves to eternal ones. How do we accomplish this? What does it mean to love with eternity in mind and heart? When we love with eternity in mind, we love with heaven’s priorities, not earth’s illusions. We stop clinging to people or possessions as if they’re ultimate and start cherishing them as sacred trusts from God. Eternal love values souls over status, character over comfort, and service over self. It seeks the good of others with forever in view, where every act of kindness, forgiveness, and sacrifice becomes a rehearsal for the eternal communion of love awaiting us in God’s presence. Take an inventory of your loves and align them with the love of Jesus Christ.
Jesus goes on to explain that we are children of God and children of the resurrection. What does He mean? Charles Spurgeon sheds light on Jesus’ words, “Think of what you are, you Christians. You are God’s children; you are joint-heirs with Christ. … You have a share in all that Christ has and is and shall be….Let us joy and rejoice in this. … Let us behave as those who are alive from the dead, the happy children of the resurrection.” Wow, heaven is our eternal inheritance!
Your heavenly inheritance is knowing and loving those you’ve known and loved on earth, now with a divine affection that transforms everything. As Spurgeon reminds us, we can rejoice with great joy, not someday, but now and forevermore. In heaven, our earthly relationships, purified and perfected, will continue without the shadows of jealousy, pain, or separation. Love will lose its limits and expand into the fullness of Christ’s redeeming grace. Every holy friendship, every act of love, will find its eternal completion in the presence of Jesus. There, joy will no longer flicker like a candle in the wind, it will burn brightly, endlessly, in the communion of the redeemed. You can look forward to knowing those in heaven whom you loved like Jesus!
“But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own” (Philippians 3:20-21).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the promise of heaven, where love is pure and complete. I rejoice that I will know and be known fully in Your everlasting love. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
