“Questions turn to remembrance, causing faith and hope to rise.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 27, 2025
by Martha Wilson
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9, ESV
Can we just be honest? Sometimes, it feels like God is far away. Is He sleeping, on vacation, or simply choosing to remain hidden? The circumstances of our lives often camouflage His blessings and goodness. We pray and pray, but nothing seems to happen. Things frequently worsen instead of getting better. Discouragement creeps in, and before we know it, our faith has slipped, leaving us gripped by doubt. The enemy uses every opportunity to snatch our hope, and we wake up, suddenly realizing we have ceased praying and even stopped believing.
The book of Psalms lifts my spirits as I see my own heart-cry in black ink on the page. The Psalmist asks some of the same questions I continue to ponder today. I was left speechless when I came across Psalm 77. The cry of the Psalmist sounds alarmingly familiar, and I’m guessing you have felt it, too.
“I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night, I stretched out untiring hands, and my soul refused to be comforted” (Psalm 77:1-2, NIV).
The writer notes that “sleep was nowhere to be found, and he was too troubled to speak.” Hard questions rolled in like a black storm, and he didn’t hesitate to toss them to God.
“Will the Lord reject forever?
Will He never show His favor again?
Has His unfailing love vanished forever?
Has His promise failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has He in anger withheld His compassion?” (v. 7-9)
Haunting questions arise from the depths of difficult situations. I am thankful that God permits the hard questions. He is neither moved nor challenged by our inquiries. He hears my every cry and will respond in His way and time. His promises are true, and He is faithful in all He does.
The Psalm suddenly turns as the writer shifts his focus from himself to the remembrance of God. Questions transform into reflections on God’s goodness and faithfulness, prompting Faith and Hope to rise.
Then I thought, “To this, I will appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High. I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds” (Psalm 77:10-12,NIV).
When God seems far away, when my fears, disappointments, and unbelief are strangling my faith, I practice the steps in scripture. I pause and remember who God is and all He has done. I begin to declare what I know to be true.
Prayer
Lord, Most High, your deeds are many, and I choose to remember them and meditate on them. When I consider your mighty deeds, faith arises in my heart. I believe in you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
What hard questions are you gripped with today? Meditate on the past goodness of the Lord and recall His mighty deeds. Declare to the Lord: “You did it before, and I know You can do it again.”
