“True learning means doing God’s will and abandoning your own.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 3, 2025
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 1 Corinthians 8:1, NIV
Happy is the person whom truth itself teaches—not through complicated theories and fancy words that disappear, but through direct experience with God. Our opinions and feelings constantly deceive us, and honestly, we understand very little. Why waste time arguing about obscure, hidden things when our ignorance of them won’t even be mentioned on judgment day? It’s pure foolishness to ignore what’s actually useful and necessary while obsessing over what’s merely curious or harmful. We have spiritual eyes but refuse to see what matters to the Lord.
What’s the point of endless political debates and worldly trivia? When God’s eternal Word speaks to you, you’re freed from a thousand unnecessary theories. All things come from that one Word, and everything points back to it—this is the beginning that speaks to us. Without that Word, no one understands or judges correctly. The person who sees all things as one, who brings everything back to one source and views everything through that lens, enjoys a quiet mind and remains peaceful in God. Consider this prayer: “God, you are truth—make me one with you in everlasting love. I’m tired of constantly reading and hearing so many things. In You is everything I want and could ever desire. Let all the experts be quiet; let all creation be silent before you. Speak to me alone.”
The more united and internally simple someone becomes, the more they understand higher things effortlessly—because they receive intellectual light from above. A pure, sincere, and stable spirit isn’t distracted, even when busy with many tasks, because everything is done for God’s honor. Being inwardly still and quiet, they don’t seek themselves in anything they do. What hinders and troubles you more than your own unhealthy desires? A humble person arranges things internally before acting externally. Disordered inclinations do not pull desires around but order everything according to right reason.
Who fights a greater battle than someone working to overcome themselves? This should be our goal: conquering ourselves, growing stronger daily, and advancing in Christlikeness. All perfection in this life has some imperfection mixed in, and all our knowledge contains some darkness. Humble self-knowledge is a surer path to Jesus than deep academic research. Learning isn’t wrong—it’s good and ordained by the Lord—but a good conscience and virtuous life should always come first. At judgment day, we won’t be examined on what we’ve read but what we’ve done—not how eloquently we’ve spoken but how godly we’ve lived. True greatness isn’t found in achievements but in love. True wisdom counts earthly things as garbage compared to gaining Christ. True learning means doing God’s will and abandoning your own.
Which are you choosing: impressive knowledge that puffs up, or transformative truth that builds character?
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).
Prayer
Lord, keep me humble in what I know. Let my learning lead to love, not pride. May I use knowledge to serve, encourage, and build others up for Your glory.
Application
How can you use knowledge to build up others and not tear them down?
