Walking in the Light

Written by Wisdom Hunters

As children of light, filled with the light of God’s own Spirit, no darkness can overcome us.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 3, 2025

by Mez Stead

I have been made a child of light in the Lord.

For at one time, you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. Ephesians 5:8

We’ve all heard it said, “These are dark times we live in.” Perhaps we’ve said it ourselves. Most certainly, we have all felt the darkness. We encounter it blaring from every source of news, global and local. But sometimes it’s our own inner anxieties and turmoil that cause us to feel the darkness most keenly. And yet, in those moments when all light seems clouded out by a force of darkness too imposing to push back, we have a promise to cling to, a beacon of hope to splinter the darkness: “but now, you are light in the Lord.”

What is God’s battle strategy for defeating the darkness? It’s us, His people, called out of the darkness we once belonged to and into his glorious light. It’s His own Spirit lighting the darkness through us, just as He appeared like glowing flames over the heads of the apostles. And as children of light, filled with the light of God’s own Spirit, no darkness can overcome us. But, we are charged with tending the light with which we’ve been entrusted. We are called to “walk as children of light.”

How do I carry out such a command? The Apostle Paul gives a leg up to those asking this question in the next verse of his letter: “For the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true.” Am I pursuing what is good, or do I fill my mind with the fruit of darkness by partaking in doom scrolling or dark entertainment? Am I taking my thoughts captive to see that they are dwelling on what is true, or do I indulge in gloomy introspection or unfounded fears? Am I sharing the light? Light is by nature an externalizing force – it shines on, lights up, and warms all that it touches. If I closet myself away or devote my days to my own problems and pleasures, I am hiding the light of the Lord rather than letting it emanate to a world that needs it (Matthew 5:15).

As children of light, we are responsible for what we allow our minds to dwell on and be filled with. Let us choose each day to step into the light that is our inheritance as children of light, to feast our minds on what is good, right, and true. Defy the darkness!

Prayer

Saviour, thank you for calling me out of darkness and making me a child of your light. Help me not to succumb to or be dismayed by the darkness in this world, but to place my hope in your victory over it and bear your light joyfully. May I ever look to you and be radiant.

Application

Have nothing to do with darkness. Instead, choose each day to walk in the light.
