Trust and Celebrate

Written by Boyd Bailey

Like Mary, trust the One who gives you life, especially when life seems out of your control.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 20, 2023

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” Luke 1:46-49

In the town of Nazareth, a young maiden named Mary, engaged to Joseph, received an unexpected visitation. An angel, Gabriel, appeared before her, bearing news that would forever change the course of humanity. “Do not be afraid, Mary,” Gabriel said, “for you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”

Imagine the shock and awe that must have flooded Mary’s heart. A young woman, betrothed but not yet married, chosen by the Almighty to bear the Son of God. Her initial reaction, like any mortal facing such divine pronouncement, might have been one of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. How could she, a virgin, conceive a child? How would this affect her betrothal to Joseph? Yet, in the face of the unknown, Mary’s response was marked by humility, trust, and celebration.

Reflecting on this momentous event, we can extol Mary’s remarkable humility. St. Augustine spoke of her obedience and unwavering faith in God’s plan despite the seeming impossibility of the situation. Her humility was not one of weakness but of strength, a submission to God’s will with a profound understanding of her place in His divine design. Mary’s humility shines through her response: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” With these words, she surrendered her will to God’s purpose, embracing her role in the grand narrative of salvation. Her humility allowed her to transcend fear and doubt, embracing the miraculous with open arms. Let humility in this holiday season give you the courage to carry on.

As the months passed and the miraculous pregnancy unfolded, Mary’s trust in God only grew stronger. Despite the societal stigma and potential repercussions, she remained steadfast, choosing to trust in the promise given to her by the angel. Her unwavering faith allowed her to face the challenges ahead with grace and resolve. Finally, as the time for Jesus’ birth drew near, Mary’s heart burst forth in a song of praise and celebration, known as the Magnificat. In this beautiful hymn, she exalted the Lord for choosing her, acknowledging His mercy, faithfulness, and greatness. Her soul magnified the Lord, rejoicing in His salvation and providence. Your celebration of praise and thanksgiving to God for your salvation in Christ glorifies the Lord!

Through Mary’s journey, we learn the power of humility, trust, and celebration in our own lives. Like Mary, may we surrender to God’s plan with humility, trusting in His unfailing love and faithfulness, even when faced with the unknown. Let us celebrate His goodness, magnifying His name in praise and worship, just as Mary did in her song of exultation. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas, may we emulate Mary’s unwavering trust and humble submission to God’s will, finding joy and peace in His promises. Trust the One who came as a humble baby to bring you into the family of God and celebrate His birthday by giving the gift of Jesus Christ! The gift of Christ can be a Bible for your child to learn about Jesus or a book like Every Moment Holy to resource your family in their regular rhythms of life to reflect on God. Consider playing background praise music in your home to cultivate a culture of worship to Father, Son and Spirit. Like Mary, trust the One who gives you life, especially when life seems out of your control.

“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus”  (Luke 1:30-31).
