Treasure Hunting

Written by Boyd Bailey

Jesus taught the kingdom of heaven has come to earth and all who submit to and follow King Jesus are servants in His kingdom.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 18, 2022

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.  Matthew 13:44

I took a stroll this morning on a sandy white beach along the panhandle of Florida. My mission was treasure hunting for the grandkids. Shells, seahorses and sand dollars all qualify as treasure for these bright eyed, eager and easily excitable grands. I was most intentional to look for grayish sand dollars, somewhat hidden beneath the swirling, soft sand as the salty waves pulsated back and forth, exposing just enough for me to dig out a fully intact prize. The ultimate treasure, rare and beautiful with imprinted lines and curves only God’s imagination can create. I discovered that hunting for the most valuable treasure took time and persistence, but paid off with great joy!

Jesus talks about hidden treasure. The master teacher packs one scripture verse full with the memorable imagery of the kingdom of heaven as a hidden treasure. This most valuable discovery is for anyone who takes the time and effort to look for divine jewels—obtained by trust, maintained by obedience. Jesus taught that the kingdom of heaven has come to earth and all who submit to and follow King Jesus are servants in His kingdom. Energy and intentionality are needed to seek first the Lord’s kingdom and trust that all other competing kingdoms will be subservient. God’s kingdom currency is faith, love and obedience. Joy results from treasuring what He treasures!

“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17).

When Jesus came to earth, He ushered in His kingdom for all who repent and believe in Him. Responsible citizens of His kingdom are actively engaged in serving the poor, the rich and all who are willing to surrender to King Jesus. Have you submitted to the ruler of heaven and earth? Or, do you carry a counterfeit passport that only represents your very small self-focused world? Citizens of darkness delight in what brings the devil delight—being self-made instead of fearfully made. Burn all counterfeits, step into the light of God’s kingdom, your place of purpose.

Invest your life in the treasure of God’s kingdom and you will inherit life that is truly life. Wisdom pursues the Lord’s kingdom now, while anticipating being like Him then. But to be passive, even ignore the reigning King Jesus on earth, is to be massively deceived by the father of this world. Search and find the jewel of the Lord’s love in intimate relationship, labor in the fields of His kingdom and celebrate His harvest of souls in praise and worship with how great thou art—the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Treasure hunting for God brings joy and purpose.

“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven” (Mark 10:11).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me trust and obey as I seek first your kingdom, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.

Application

What competing kingdom do you need to flee to focus on God’s kingdom?
