Addicted To Drink… “When will I wake up so I can find another drink?” Proverbs 23:35b
There are those who are addicted to drink. They feel like they have to feel it’s numbing affect or they are unable to cope with life’s circumstances. Drink is deceptive, because its abuse leads to sorrow and strife. It is subtle with its ability to create a smile, but then it bites like a snake with poisonous outcomes. Those who drink too much get little respect and become an emotional burden to those who know them well.
How is your intake of alcohol? Is it excessive and out of control? Does it take liquid courage to get you through life? If so, sincere trust in Jesus Christ is your ticket to taming this wild beast of fear and false hope. The Lord replaces lingering over drink with loving others. He gives heaven’s hope to the heart that is healthy for both body and soul. There is no need for artificial stimulation when the Holy Spirit strengthens your inner being. “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:18).
Moreover, what is your method of ministry to those who cannot handle their alcohol? Is it tough love or passive tolerance? Have you established boundaries with well-defined consequences, or is your friend floating along toward self-destruction? It’s better to be confrontational when there are signs of abuse, than to ignore and accelerate bad behavior. Yes, pray for your family member or friend who drinks too much, but also be willing to intervene and insist on them getting help. Invest money in their recovery, not their wants.
Ultimately Jesus Christ is the answer to all additions. He forgives a fractured faith. He heals a hurting heart. He gives peace to a conflicted soul. Drink of His living water of life and you will be satisfied. “For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17). Do I drink from the Lord’s cup of trust or the world’s cup of false hope? Do I enable or exhort those with drinking issues? “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
