The Power of Agreements

Written by Shana Schutte

Agreements align us with good or evil.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 14, 2021

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. Colossians 2:8

When I was young, I had a three-year relationship with a young man whom I loved. But when we broke up, my heart was crushed and I agreed with the Adversary (and my ex-boyfriend) that I was bad, that I had ruined my life, and that no one was going to love me like he had. These agreements aligned with evil, and as a result, I felt as if I couldn’t get over the hurt. I was stuck in regret, grief, and guilt.

While I was emotionally stuck, I told God I wanted to get free; I prayed to get free, but I was still bound because I was holding onto lies. And, because I didn’t believe God’s truth, I kept trying to “fix what happened back there” by rehashing memories over and over. I wanted to understand what went wrong, but I never could.

One day many years later after feeling emotionally trapped for far too long, the Lord revealed to me that my old relationship wasn’t holding onto me; I was holding onto it through agreements that were not of God. When I finally agreed with Jesus that He still had a good plan for my life, that I was forgiven for how I sinned against my boyfriend, and that I wasn’t an evil person, the negative feelings I had been carrying around waned and then they finally disappeared. Freedom came when I received God’s truth.

Listen up, friend. Agreements align us with good or evil which brings either good or evil power into our lives—and agreements with evil can keep us attached to something or someone which we have the power to release in Christ.

Ephesians 6:12 says we are in a spiritual battle against powers of darkness. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Every time we make an agreement, we choose which side of the battle line we are standing on— and who we are standing with. Are we standing with Christ? Through our agreements, we choose defeat, oppression, and fear, or we choose victory, freedom, and confidence.

If you agree with darkness, it will cause you to align with the darkness, which will bring evil power into your life. If you agree with the Light, you will align with the Light, which will bring more of His good power into your life. Through agreements, we are choosing who we believe and what we believe.

Agreements can be: “I can’t” or “I can.”

“God doesn’t love me” or “God loves me and cares for me.”

“It’s impossible” or “All things are possible with Christ.”

“I hate them” or “I forgive them.”

“I can’t forgive myself” or “God’s grace covers my sin.”

When we agree with the lies of the Adversary, will receive nothing good. He has only come to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10)

When we agree with Christ, and what He says about us, we can be confident that He will never lead us astray but will only lead us into abundant life.

“In righteousness you will be established; You will be far from oppression, for you will not fear; And from terror, for it will not come near you” (Isaiah 54:14).

Prayer

Lord, help me agree with You and what You say. Help me to agree with your truth and not allow the devil a foothold in my life. I choose today to agree with you and walk in Your way. Amen.

Application

Are you agreeing with the devil? Ask the Lord to show you. If He brings up something you are agreeing with the Adversary about, ask the Lord to show you His truth, then tell the Lord you accept it.
