Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 11, 2018
Let the king be enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord. Psalm 45:11
Most women will not be the mother and wife of a president, but all can be beautiful in the eyes of their heavenly Father. Elegant, engaging and enlightening are words that come to mind when I think of how Barbara Bush carried herself, as First Lady to her husband and First Mother to her son. A woman of Texas tenacity, tough love and a tender heart—she inspires toward a fulfilling life of faith, family and country. I never met Mrs. Bush, but have admired her for years: her straight talk gave me courage to be clear in my communication, and her quiet confidence gave me permission to be myself. Barbara Bush is a woman worth following and here’s why:
A Champion of Common Sense
“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31:26).
Her words were weighty, each one thought through and applied with grace. “Cherish your human connections—your relationships with friends and family”. She was intentional and bold in her relational investments. Her family knew they were priority and she was not shy about reminding her spouse and the world of an easily overlooked reality, “You may think the president is all powerful, but he is not. He needs a lot of guidance from the Lord”. Uncommon common sense!
How do you seek the Lord’s wisdom? Christ is the best beginning point because He is the wisdom of God. The Lord entrusts wisdom to a humble heart seeking to align with Christ’s heart. So without overthinking, trust the Spirit to lead you to do the next right thing. Like using a faith flashlight, one step in the light leads to the next step in the light. Common sense comes from God’s practical wisdom.
Channeled Her Pain Into Solving a Problem
Mrs. Bush experienced first hand the awful pain of loss—her six year old daughter Robin to leukemia and her own struggle with Graves disease. But in spite of her heartaches, and because of her son Neil’s struggle with dyslexia, she was inspired to help the illiterate by establishing the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Her vision included the joy of parent and child learning to read together. Her “big idea” has grown bigger, as she has left a legacy of generosity.
What issue or person has interrupted your life, perhaps crushed your spirit? Instead of languishing in self-pity or losing sleep over feeling unloved, what if you channeled your pain into productivity? Unleash your passion to solve a problem. If divorce rocked your world, become an advocate for marriage enrichment—educate others in relational best practices. Maybe you have neglected the Bible, become an intentional student of God’s Word and invite others to join you. Whatever your cause, allow the Holy Spirit to empower and equip you!
Celebrate your current season of life by realizing your incredible significance. Barbara Bush said it best, “It seems to me I spent my life in carpools, but you know, that’s how I kept track of what was going on”. You may be carpooling the next President, so carry on for Christ’s sake!
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10).
