“Discipleship always has an outward trajectory.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 29, 2025
Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. Luke 12:48b, ESV
I’ve spent much of my life studying theology and seeking to grow in my knowledge of the Christian faith. I have multiple master’s degrees and a doctorate in Christian education. Yet if I am ever tempted to think such training and experience is a source of pride or achievement, the Lord in his mercy reminds me of passages such as Luke 12:48. “Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required.”
In truth, I did not factor this in when I said “yes” to these programs of study! I enjoyed academics and wanted to deepen my understanding of our faith, yet rarely paused to consider how such knowledge would, by necessity, change every part of my life. Simply put, if and when we say we want to “grow in our faith,” we should feel the weight of these words!
Infants in the faith are not expected to be mature leaders. Someone who has never run a mile is not asked to enter a marathon. Yet if we have experience and knowledge, and then fail to act on it for the glory of God and the good of others, we are living reckless and unfaithful lives. It is as though God gave us a gift that we then promptly reject and squander away.
Before you start your next Bible study or prepare for a mission trip, think twice! Consider what the Lord will ask and expect of you on the other side of this training or experience. You will not be the same person that you were before, and something new may be asked of you as a result of your growth in knowledge and grace. Discipleship always has an outward trajectory. We grow, not simply for our own sakes, but so that the peace and life we encounter more deeply can be shared with those who deeply need it.
Prayer
Father, as we grow in knowledge and wisdom, may we also grow in our courage to give our lives away for your sake, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
Think about the skills, training, and experiences you have as a Christian man or woman. How have you been shaped so that you can give your life away in service to God and neighbor?
