The Glory of Age

Written by Mez Stead

Though our bodies age, we are spiritually renewed day-by-day when we walk with the Lord.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 30, 2025

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4

God’s Word speaks into every area of our lives, including those we would rather not think about more than we must. Take, for instance, aging. Not one of us sits about daydreaming on the prospect of getting older, but it is a reality each of us faces and would do well to ponder in light of God’s wisdom. My husband and I speak frequently about how we can ensure that we age well, in such a way that is God-honouring and Kingdom-seeking, no matter the state of our declining bodies. We have seen aging done well, and not so well. We have known those who use age and infirmity as an excuse to bow out of life and community, and those who have viewed age as an opportunity to serve in new ways, even if it’s praying from a sick bed.

There is a common characteristic among those older saints who seem to age with so much grace. It is partly, I believe, that they recognize aging itself is a grace. This idea seems counterintuitive to our society, which tries desperately to cheat and avoid age, as if it’s a mortal enemy lying in wait to catch us unawares and destroy us. But that is not how our God views age, and as Christians, it is our right and our duty to reclaim the honour and beauty of old age. To walk years with the Lord learning his ways, to grow in intimacy with him, to gain the gift of wisdom, to watch his faithfulness prove true time and time again and have that story to tell to the next generations… These are the gifts of old age. Yes, youth is a gift, but a seasonal one, and not worthy of our confidence. The treasures that last are those that ripen with time as we walk with the Lord.

The way we think about aging ultimately reflects where we’ve placed our trust. Am I fearful or fretful of a wrinkle, a greying head? With every new physical sign of age, let us call to mind the glorious promises God has given us: I will renew your strength; I will never leave you nor forsake you; I will carry you; I will sustain you; those who look unto the Lord shall be radiant. For those who rest their hope upon them, God’s promises only sweeten with age.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the faithful ones who have walked before me and shared the testimony of your unfailing love and goodness. May I never despise or fear aging, but stake my hope on your promises and delight each new morning in your fresh mercies and never-failing love for me. Amen.

Application

When tempted to fret about aging, turn your mind to God’s faithfulness and his evergreen promises to you.
