“Holiness is at the heart of God’s glory. It is wholeness, goodness, the earth and humanity as it was made to be.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 28, 2025
Worship the LORD in the splendour of holiness. Psalm 96:9
What images does the word “Holiness” conjure in your mind’s eye? Pictures of pious, pale-faced saints with sorrowful eyes and folded hands? The stiff, monotone garb of the Puritans? Perhaps the images are coloured with muted hues of the out-dated, the drab, or the stuffy. Few of us lie awake at night with eager thoughts of a new day to grow in holiness. Even fewer spend our days in a passionate pursuit of that end. The word simply fails to thrill or inspire us.
But if we are not inspired by the idea of holiness, perhaps we need a re-acquaintance with the concept painted in vivid, living colour for us in Psalm 96, of holiness marked by splendour. The Psalmist describes the LORD as coming in a fanfare of victorious glory that fills the whole earth. Seas roar, trees sing, the heavens shout for joy, and the earth trembles at the very sight of his triumphant beauty. And into this glorious picture, we are invited! The dress-code? The splendour of holiness.
This picture may be many things, but it is certainly not drab or dreary. The imagination thrills with images of crimson robes and golden crowns, of earthy ordinariness transformed into a kingdom of unearthly beauty. Holiness is at the heart of all that glory. It is wholeness, goodness, the earth and humanity as it was made to be.
But perhaps this reimagining of holiness in all its splendour leaves us feeling that, while desirable, is completely unattainable. And yet, God has called each and every ordinary one of us to “Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). What hope have we? Every hope in the world if we look to the One who put off his splendour to take on the dust and drabness of our human flesh. Though he clothed himself in ordinariness, yet the beauty of holiness shone through in his every word and deed. If we set our eyes on Christ’s holiness, lived out in ordinary time, we can bring the beauty of holiness into our everyday lives. This is what it means to seek first his Kingdom. And if we set our hope on his future return, in the full regalia of his glory, we can rest assured that the King will not fail to clothe us in the splendour of his own holiness when he comes.
Prayer
King Jesus, enthral me anew with the beauty of your holiness, that I might desire it in my life. By your grace, help me to throw off anything that keeps me from worshipping you in the splendour of holiness. Draw me further up and further into your glorious Kingdom. Amen.
Application
Seek Christ and his Kingdom first, and he will grant you his holiness.
