Rest and Relief from Discouragement

Written by Shana Schutte

Being under the authority and the teaching of the Master brings liberty and rest.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 13, 2023

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17

There are times in all our lives when we feel weary and tired. Maybe you’re in that place now. You want to give up. You feel as if you can’t go on. You’re downcast, downtrodden, and discouraged.

The loving Lord Jesus has a promise for you today.

In Matthew 11:28-29 He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

To be heavy laden means you are overburdened but being under the authority and the teaching of the Master brings liberty and rest.

In this scripture, Jesus is promising cessation from our toils, from being weary and heavy laden . . . cessation from the world’s way of thinking, the world’s way of doing things, and the world’s way of functioning. He promises to give you His yoke and His rest—and to do so with a humble heart.

When you go to Him for relief from your burden and discouragement, you need not worry that you will be met with condemnation or chiding words of “You should do better.” Instead, with His gentle and humble heart, He will love you into rest that restores.

There are times when we may go to Christ to give Him our burden, but we still feel burdened. We still feel weighted down, discouraged, and weary. Sometimes experiencing the rest and restoration we need takes more than one conversation with Christ. It requires taking on His yoke and way of doing things. It takes learning of Him—and sometimes that involves making life changes to remove our burdens.

If we go to Jesus for relief from our discouragement and we continually still feel discouraged, it may be that we are still attempting to carry our own burden. Perhaps we have not exchanged His yoke and way of doing things for our way of doing things. It may be that we are not learning from Him and that we have not placed ourselves under His authority.

It may be that we need something practical to find rest such as more sleep, or time away from a demanding job. Regardless, Jesus wants to teach you and show you what you need.

Perhaps if you are tired, the Lord is asking you, “Are you tired of carrying your own burden?” in the same way that He asked the man at the pool of Bethesda, “Do you want to be made well?”

He is waiting and ready to give you rest and lift your discouragement and burden. Go to Him today. He’s calling you.

“Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden.”

Lord, how I love that you are holding out rest for me today. How I love that you want to relieve me of my burden. How I love your love. You are so good to me, kind, and tender. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
