Receiving God’s Gifts

Written by Boyd Bailey

Trust your heavenly Father’s love by receiving His good, generous gifts to bless you and others.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 12, 2026

If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Matthew 7:11

C.S. Lewis writes this to a friend who is striving to do something for God, “Sometimes when you are wondering what God wants you to do, He really wants to give you something.” So true. Our generous heavenly Father is a giver, not a taker. He started at our salvation experience, giving us the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. He continued giving us an abundant life in Christ through the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Love, joy, and peace are His internal gifts. Food, clothing, and shelter are His external gifts. Do you slow down enough to linger with your Gift-giver to receive His love?

You know how to love imperfectly. Despite your flaws, selfishness, and broken places, you still give good things to those you care about. Even in your brokenness, you have this basic instinct to protect, provide for, and bless those you love. Now grasp this: if your imperfect love moves you toward generosity, how much more does your heavenly Father’s perfect love compel Him to give? Jesus uses brilliant logic here: arguing from the lesser to the greater. Your human love, flawed as it is, still produces good gifts. God’s love? Infinitely better. Perfectly reliable. Completely trustworthy. He’s not a distant ruler waiting to punish or a demanding judge keeping score. He’s Abba Father, who is generous and wise, eager to give precisely what you need.

Notice the double meaning: He wants to give, and He only gives good things. Sometimes what you ask for differs from what you receive, but His wisdom ensures the gift fits your deepest needs, not just your surface desires. Luke 11:13 clarifies the ultimate good gift: the Holy Spirit. Not primarily material blessings, but spiritual resources: guidance, comfort, holiness, power for living. James 1:17 reinforces this: every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights, who never changes, never shifts, never disappoints. Your Father gives well. Trust His generosity. Trust His wisdom. Ask boldly, knowing He delights in blessing His children with exactly what they need most. Grace doesn’t require you to qualify; it requires you to receive good gifts.

Often, the Lord works through His children to bless you more. Don’t hesitate to accept this divine charity. By accepting, you also help the giver obey. Sometimes, you help them realize their unique talents as they give, and the joy of generosity lifts their spirits. Their prayer brings comfort to your soul, and a timely word of encouragement gives you hope. Celebrate Spirit-led gifts from your good, generous Father. The receiver is blessed, and the giver is twice blessed.

As you receive heaven’s gifts, reserve the glory for God. The world trains you to credit yourself: your hustle, your talent, your willpower. But every good gift comes from above, from the Father of lights who never changes. Your abilities? His design. Your opportunities? His provision. Your breakthroughs? His grace working through you. Glorifying God through receiving looks like this: acknowledge the gift, thank the Giver, steward it well, and point others back to Jesus. Let your life be a testimony, not of what you’ve accomplished, but of what He’s given. That’s how children honor their Father: by celebrating His generosity, not their worthiness. His approval is enough. His validation is everything. Let earth’s applause fade while heaven’s amplifies. Trust your heavenly Father’s love by receiving His good, generous gifts to bless you and others.

“What do you have that you did not receive?” (1 Corinthians 4:7)
