Not Ready

Written by Boyd Bailey

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 8, 2014

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. John 16:12-13

I am not always ready to receive what the Lord wants to show me or teach me. It may mean my heart needs to be humbled, my head needs understanding or my experience needs to catch up with my knowledge. My loving heavenly Father knows the best timing, so I don’t become proud over success or humiliated over failure. I am learning to trust Him with what’s best when I am ready for the next step. In the meantime, I will remain faithful where I am.

Jesus knew the disciples were at a disadvantage—they had yet to receive the Holy Spirit. Like a pilot who becomes instrument rated, these followers of Christ would soon have the Spirit of God to guide them through the clear and cloudy days to come. Out of compassion, the Lord did not place more on His followers until they were ready to apply what they knew. Information only frustrates if there is no comprehension or clarity in what to do next. The Spirit prepares us.

“I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it” (1 Corinthians 3:2).

How is the Lord stretching and growing your faith? Perhaps His Spirit says for you to remain faithful in thoroughness with the little things, so you can be trusted with larger opportunities. A small job well done is the bridge to a bigger job. You realize your potential by realizing God gives you just what you need when you need it and not before. If you prematurely take matters into your own hands you may get what you want—but forfeit your heavenly Father’s reward.

Therefore, by God’s grace, grow in patience and perseverance. Take time to learn the ways of Jesus by following the Spirit of truth with a humble heart. What’s obscure becomes lucid as you wait on the Lord. Thus, submit to the Lord’s process of being a lifetime learner. Aspire to learn from the Spirit so you can be led by the Spirit. Indeed the Spirit directs a life in motion. Like a visionary pioneer, stay in the process of proceeding through the unknown. The promised land is acquired by those who learn and apply their heavenly Father’s promises. Let Him ready you!

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I trust You to get me ready for what You’ll have me be and do.
