“Submit to your Master Jesus, whose love can be trusted.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 5, 2025
Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. “Master,” he said, “I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.” Matthew 25:24-25
Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, offers a practical decision-making guide for wise living by posing three questions to pray about and reflect on at a young age: Who is your Master? Who will be your Mate? And, what is your Mission? For today’s reflection, I want to focus on Truett’s first question. What did the successful entrepreneur and passionate Jesus follower mean by “Who is your master”? In his book, Eat Mor Chikin, Cathy says, “It’s easy to determine when something is right or wrong. You have to ask yourself, ‘Who is your master?’ You can’t serve two masters.” His question calls readers to evaluate whether they serve God or worldly ambitions such as money, success, or comfort—echoing Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve both God and money.” Who is your Master?
In His famous Parable of the Talents, Jesus describes one of three men driven by fear: “I knew that you are a hard man,” he says confidently. He then explains that he was so full of fear that he simply hid the money in the ground. However, his confidence is misplaced. The Master, who represents God, is not a hard man; in fact, the fearful servant only reveals his own hard heart filled with fear and mistrust. Sad. Our heavenly Father is generous and caring, His love can be trusted. He is not a hard man. The love of God offers freedom, not fear’s bondage.
What is your view of your master, Jesus Christ? Is He a strict, judgmental taskmaster? Or, is He a loving, grace-filled Lord? Yes, He is away now and will return one day in the blink of an eye to reign as King forever. But in the meantime, He has given you and me an assignment: to multiply the blessings He has generously given us for the advancement of His Kingdom on earth. Fear has no place in a heart full of love. Excuses are weak and only dismiss the Lord’s love for you.
If you choose Jesus as your Master, and it is a daily surrender rather than a one-time decision, then you have wisely chosen a generous, loving, and forgiving Master. He doesn’t demand perfection; He invites trust. His leadership brings freedom, not fear; purpose, not pressure. Jesus rewards faithfulness with joy and transforms service into worship. He multiplies what you offer: your time, talents, and love, using them to bless others and expand His kingdom. Unlike worldly masters who take and diminish, He gives abundantly and replenishes. Under His care, your heart finds peace, your labor gains eternal significance, and your failures are met with forgiveness. To follow Jesus is to discover true mastery, not domination, but Love leading love. Obedience becomes a privilege, and surrender becomes the path to freedom and fruitfulness. Submit to your Master Jesus, whose love can be trusted, not a hard man, but a generous man.
“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey… whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?” (Romans 6:16)
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I joyfully submit to You as my Master. Teach me to trust Your perfect love, obey Your will, and serve with humility and gratitude, knowing You lead with grace. In Your name I pray, Amen.
