No Safety Net

Written by Boyd Bailey

God’s perfect provision will meet your every need in His perfect timing for His glory.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 12, 2025

Then Jesus said, “When I sent you out and told you to travel light, to take only the bare necessities, did you get along all right?” “Certainly,” they said, “we got along just fine.” Luke 22:35, MSG

I appreciate having a safety net, having a backup plan in case something goes wrong. However, Jesus sent out the disciples without any backup, relying solely on Him and other generous followers of the Lord. Clearly, they lacked nothing because, when they returned home, Jesus asked how they managed in traveling light, with only the bare essentials. “We got along just fine,” was the response from these faithful few. Sometimes, our Savior calls us to increase our faith by relying less on our own provision. Where is He asking you to go unencumbered?

What Jesus is asking is clear, but it remains hard for me. I lean more toward the Bible passages where Jesus shows the importance of counting the costs before building a tower or going to war. Don’t presume upon the Lord. Instead, prepare to do His work in a way that seeks to glorify Him—a kind of safety net. Still, is there room for both? How can we discern God’s best? This is where it gets interesting and fun, the extraordinary adventure of following our wondrous Lord.

“I like to carry a light backpack.” Words of a friend I’ve watched for years, wanting to be available. Unencumbered by financial debt or the complexity of too much stuff sucking the life out of a desire to be free to serve and give generously. Less truly is more in the kingdom of God. How ironic that my “need” to be secure can actually feed my insecurities by limiting how I can be available for what my good, heavenly Father desires. Can I trust Jesus over my safety net?

What if, practically speaking, the Lord is calling you to rent a condo instead of buying a house? A simpler lifestyle means dealing with less emotional and financial clutter. Or the Lord may be calling you to turn down a promotion, so you can be free to serve your loved one who is in a difficult season or be available for an annual mission trip to share the gospel through words and deeds. Make sure your security does not become your insecurity, when what you thought was a safety net of stuff has only locked you into a cage of maintaining an unavailable lifestyle. The backpack that you thought was light is actually weighing you down with the responsibility of protecting, preserving, and worrying about possessions that were supposed to provide freedom, but instead demand constant attention. Less is truly more when it avails Kingdom opportunities.

Most of all, your loving heavenly Father will ensure you lack nothing. Wherever the Holy Spirit guides you, He provides the necessary resources and relationships to accomplish His desired purpose. An unseen safety net is woven together on the Lord’s loom of love and care. Even when you can’t see the threads, His providence is at work, quietly aligning circumstances, opening doors, and supplying strength for each step. Your faith may wobble under the weight of a test of trust, but His faithfulness never fails or disappoints. Move forward confidently, knowing God’s perfect provision will meet your every need in His perfect timing for His glory. Love is His net.

“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

Prayer

Lord, as I simplify my life, teach me to trust Your provision. Free me from excess and fear, and fill me with contentment, knowing You supply all my needs. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Application

What are you depending on other than the Lord that is weighing you down?
