Looking for Direction

Written by Boyd Bailey

God’s will can sometimes seem dim at best, this is why a community of Jesus followers is necessary to help bring clarity…to shed light.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 30, 2022

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:7, KJV

Are you looking for direction? A clear career path, a solution to a problem, a relational conflict, heath issues or financial wisdom. If so, make sure you are walking in the light of God’s love, so you can have a clear view of what Christ wants for you. Deeds done in darkness cloud once visible life vistas and cause the undiscerning to wrongly choose at the crossroads of wise or foolish decision-making. If you feel like truth is becoming obscured in the shadows of wrong influences, then perhaps you would be wise to invite in wise companions who are walking in the light. God’s will can sometimes seem dim at best, this is why a community of Jesus followers is necessary to help bring clarity…to shed light. The right direction is discovered in wise counsel.

Paul applies John’s idea as he reminds believers of unbelievers who are influenced to follow the “god of this age who blinds the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). But, for the follower of Jesus, the light of Jesus is available to all who are cleansed by the blood of Christ and forgiven of their sin. One and done…your salvation experience…then an ongoing need for sin’s forgiveness, which invites in the light of love to walk with the Lord in fellowship with His own. Walking can be refreshing or wearisome, either way it’s life-giving to walk in the light together.

“Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord” (Psalm 89:15).

Charles Spurgeon addresses this idea of walking in the light by clarifying what it means to be in the light, as God is in the light, “That famous old commentator, John Trapp, says, “We may be in the light as God is in the light for quality, but not for equality.” We are to have the same light, and are as truly to have it and walk in it as God does, though, as for equality with God in his holiness and purity, that must be left until we cross the Jordan and enter into the perfection of the Most High. Mark that the blessings of sacred fellowship and perfect cleansing are bound up with walking in the light. All other lesser lights are snuffed out next to divinity’s eternal flame.

To remain in the righteous light of the Lord stay prayed up, by confessing your sins to God and to others you may have unintentionally caused pain. Unconfessed sin smothers the light of love. Or, if you are withholding forgiveness, you are withholding God’s forgiveness for you. Not forgiveness for salvation, but forgiveness in the freedom of fellowship with Christ and His followers. Jesus states emphatically, “But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:15). Unforgiveness, fractures—even severs, fellowship with those who love you the most and who wish you the best. The light of forgiveness breathes life. Dead ends lurk in cold, dark places…clear direction traffics in the warm light of God’s love.

“God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth” (1 John 1:5-6).
