Living by Faith for What’s Behind

Written by Shana Schutte

He hasn’t held your sin against you for even one minute.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 9, 2022

As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” Romans 10:11

This week as I considered my past, I felt stinging regret brought on by the remembrance of my sin. Even though my choices were made in ignorance when I was young, it seems the Accuser likes to take the opportunity to wound me by reminding me of my failure. As regret always does, it hurt. But then I took my pain to Christ and His love flooded my heart as the Holy Spirit ministered to me and the Accuser’s lies fell away.

If you have wrestled with regret or shame, I pray the words that came into my heart and mind, which I believe were from the Lord, will minister to you.

I can see what you cannot. I am all-knowing. And so, you must walk by faith, not just for what’s ahead of you, but for what’s behind you, too. I can see the beginning from the end. There is nothing that I do not know. There is no outcome that I cannot perceive. From beginning to end, I am all-knowing. You are limited in your sight. You cannot perceive what might have been. And so, you must trust that I was in your past, guiding you in ways that were best.

Your limited knowledge of potential outcomes and “What ifs?” can be a gift or a curse. Your limited knowledge can be a gift as you surrender to Me and live by faith, knowing I was there in the past, that I love you, and that I did what was best for you. Or, your limited knowledge can be a curse as you continually spin in the torture of “What if?” You cannot go back. You cannot change the perception others had of you. All you can do is live fully in the now, in the present, and in My love.

You do not need to try to undo the sin of your choices by doing good now. You don’t need to try and prove that you aren’t a bad person. You don’t need to try and wash away your sin through performing. I haven’t held your choices against you for one minute. I have never condemned you, even if others condemned you.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2).

You must not listen to the voices from the past who shamed you, blamed you, and said you were bad. Their voices were not of me. They were being used to wound you. I want—and have always wanted—to give you life. Believe me. Listen to me. I have never stopped doing you good. My plan has always been to bless you. I have always been working to bring life to you.

The Accuser wants to hold you back and keep you down. He wants to keep you trapped in the past. I have come to give you full life in every way. You do not need to go back to the past to experience life. You need to trust me. I am in the now. Come to me in the now. This is where I am working.

The lie is that if you could go back, that you could experience life and joy and love in a way that is greater than what you have now. In believing these lies, you miss out on what I am doing now and the goodness I am giving you now. You miss out on my gifts and reject them. Trust me. I have never stopped doing good to you.”

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here” (2 Corinthians 5:17)!

Prayer

Lord, I see that you cannot fathom what might have been. To live in regret based on my limited knowledge is foolish. You are the great I Am who knows all, and you know me through and through. You know what is best for me. I do not. And so, I fully submit to you and choose to trust you, Lord. I know that one day I will fully see and fully understand. Until then, Jesus, I ask that you continue to teach me to live by faith, not just for what’s ahead, but also for what is behind. Amen.

Application

Tell the Lord that you will live by faith and trust Him with your past, not just with your future.
