Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 25, 2015
Guard my life, for I am faithful to you; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God; have mercy on me, Lord, for I call to you all day long. Psalm 86:2-3
Life happens every day. In November 2013 my family’s world was rocked when my mother-in-law suffered a severe stroke. Unable to read, write, talk plainly or care for herself—Jean requires ongoing attention and care. My father-in-law has stepped up and served her with joy, love and patience. My wife Rita schedules regular three hour trips to take her mom to the doctor, enjoy lunch and go shopping on the way home. By God’s grace, we are trying to make the best of a difficult situation. When life happens we can become better or we can become bitter.
God’s protection does not preclude pain and suffering for his saints. We live in a sin cursed world that causes conflict, hurt and heartache. But God does guard us. When we trust Christ with the unknown He guards our heart from worry. When we renew our mind with His Word He guards our mind from deceptive lies. Because life happens every day—the good, the bad and the ugly—we lean into the Lord for His wisdom, comfort and direction. We call to Him all day long.
“Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle” (Proverbs 23:5).
Has life caused you to feel trapped? Has money become such an issue that you struggle to pay the bills? Perhaps life was smooth sailing, but now a storm has disrupted your course. You want to make a course correction, but you are not sure where to go. Fortunately, you have a heavenly Father who wants you to dock at His safe harbor of grace. There may still be rough waters ahead, but the Lord’s lighthouse of love shines brightly as your salvation. Keep moving toward the light. He will guide you around threatening reefs of unbelief. Persevere with God’s presence.
You may feel undervalued because you were passed over for a promotion. To make matters worse your friend did not tell you privately why you were not chosen. Your loyalty seems unrewarded. You are used to encouraging others, but now you need encouragement. When life happens, we still have abundant life in Christ. The true riches of knowing Jesus and being known by Him makes us wealthy in what matters most. The support of our family is a solid rock of assurance. When life happens we pull together in prayer. We receive life from our loving Lord!
“In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19).
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your stability through life’s unpredictable moments.
