Letter from God

Written by Boyd Bailey

God is for you with peace when you feel anxious, courage when you feel afraid and confidence when you are in doubt.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 12, 2021

Bear with me a little, and I will show you that there are yet words to speak on God’s behalf. Job 36:2

This past week I asked a group of five 26 year old young men to prayerfully write a letter from God. Not a dictation from the Lord’s voice, but a compilation of compliments and corrections of how their heavenly Father might think and feel about them as His beloved sons. Not surprisingly, each letter carried its own unique variations of love and concern from his Creator. Humor, areas for growth and divine affirmations punctuated the tone and tenor of the truths expressed. After getting over the initial “weirdness” of “writing” for God, each young man felt fully loved by their heavenly Father. Here is the letter I wrote to try to explain my current experience with God:

Dear Boyd,

You are my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. Remain on my path of love being loved by Me, loving others, and loving yourself. Continue to integrate your true self into the image of my son Jesus. Grow in grace, humility and love by being still before Me, listening to My heart for your heart. Fill your mind with My truth as you become more and more free to love and be loved.

Stay available for your family and friends to comfort, love and perhaps advise them at their felt need during their time of vulnerability. Be real with me and others and I will be real to you and they will be real with you. Rest in my love.

I Love You My Son,

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

After pondering these words of how the Lord might love and feel about me, I surmised this:

God is for me. He is for me to follow His son Jesus with passion and purpose. God is for me to be a loving husband, engaged father, fun grandfather and faithful servant leader. He is for me with peace when I feel anxious, courage when I feel afraid and confidence when I am in doubt. God is for me to be generous with my time, money and influence. He is for me to be grateful, always. And because God is for me—no one, no circumstance or no evil influence can come against me to take away what the Lord has given me—forgiveness of sin, grace and love to live.

Perhaps you can write a letter from God to yourself—your true self, beloved by your heavenly Father. Write prayerfully. Write honestly. Write with an open heart. Be still and quiet in solitude to see how God sees you. He knows you the best and loves you the most.

Reflect on this: It is in this solitude that we discover that being is more important than having, and that we are worth more than the results of our efforts. In solitude we discover that our life is not a possession to be defended, but a gift to be shared. It’s there we recognize that the healing words we speak are not just our own, but are given to us; that the love we can express is part of a greater love; and the new life we bring forth is not a property to cling to, but a gift to be received. Henri Nouwen

For he [Jesus] is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit” (John 3:34).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me the courage and faith to draw near to you, especially when I feel you are far way, through Christ’s love, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Application

Consider writing a letter 300-500 words long from God and share with a friend.
