He’s in Control Even When It Looks Like He Isn’t

Written by Shana Schutte

Faith does not need to see to believe God is in control.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 15, 2023

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

This morning, I sat in my favorite quiet-time chair to talk with the Lord and commune with Him in stillness. As I prepared to open my Bible, a thought entered my heart which I felt was from the Lord:

“You never have to be afraid of anything.”

I responded, “I know I don’t, Lord. You have it all under control.”

This simple interaction with Jesus brought to mind another truth: believing everything is under His control doesn’t mean His control looks like my control.

Knowing He is sovereignly working all things out doesn’t mean He is working them out according to my plan. But it does mean He is working them out to a good, good plan — His plan which I cannot often understand or comprehend in the moment.

As His plan for our lives unfolds, we mustn’t assess it as being good or bad if things are going well or going poorly in the moment. God’s plan encompasses far more than now, more than next week, next month or next year. His plan includes eternal and hidden things. This is one reason why walking by faith is important.

“For we live by believing and not by seeing” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NLT).

If we judge whether or not God is in control by whether or not he’s controlling things how we’d like, then we will become discouraged and perhaps even doubt His love. We might even become angry with Him.

In her famous poem “My Life is But a Weaving,” the beloved author Corrie ten Boom wrote,

My life is but a weaving
between my God and me.
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.

Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper
and I the underside.

Not ‘til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reasons why.

The dark threads are as useful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

He knows; He loves; He cares.
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

What an amazing God we serve! He loves you. He is in control—and with a good plan! Faith does not need to see to believe God is in control. Will you choose to trust Him today?

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1).

Prayer

Lord, when I cannot see what you are doing, I will trust you. When I cannot see the path, I will trust you. And, when I am afraid of the future, I will trust you, knowing you are fully in control. Amen.

Application

If you need to let go of control of an outcome, give it to the Lord today.
