“Be ambitious with a heart to bless, and you will be blessed in the process.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – July 30, 2025
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:3
Ambition means to pursue. There can be both good and bad pursuits of ambition. It depends on what you are pursuing and the reasons behind it. To pursue Christ for the sake of growing more like Jesus is a holy desire that grows the fruit of the Spirit over a lifetime. Pursuing money, power, and autonomy for control and status is a selfish desire that leaves relationships in disrepair and leaves the Lord out of daily living. Healthy ambition pursues God’s call and obeys.
Imagine two climbers scaling the same mountain. Both are driven, focused, and relentless in their pursuit. However, one climbs to plant a flag with his own name on it, while the other climbs to rescue someone stranded on the peak. That’s the difference between godly and selfish ambition—not the intensity of the drive, but the destination of the heart. Godly ambition burns just as brightly, works just as hard, and dreams just as big. The difference lies in the quiet question that shapes every decision: “Is this for me, or is this for Him?” “Why am I doing this?”
Selfish ambition whispers seductive lies: “You deserve this promotion. You need that recognition. They should know how important you are.” It feeds on comparison, thrives on competition, and leaves you hollow even when you win. Success becomes a drug that never quite satisfies because it is meant to fill a God-shaped hole with trophy-shaped substitutes. Godly ambition asks different questions: “How can I serve? What would honor Him? Where is He calling me to make a difference?” It may pursue the same goals—the promotion, the platform, the opportunity—but for radically different reasons. When godly ambition succeeds, it instinctively points upward. When it fails, it trusts that God’s plans are bigger than temporary setbacks. The heart check is simple: when you dream about your future success, who’s getting the applause in your imagination? Does your life point people to Jesus or you alone?
In James 3:14-16, he describes the disorder selfish ambition brings, “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth… For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.” Selfish ambition doesn’t just corrupt the ambitious—it poisons entire environments. James warns that where selfish ambition takes root, chaos follows like a shadow. Relationships fracture under the weight of competition. Trust erodes when people become stepping stones rather than souls. Teams splinter as everyone fights for their piece of the spotlight. What starts as personal pride metastasizes into toxicity, creating workplaces where backstabbing feels normal and integrity becomes optional. Selfish ambition promises order through control but delivers disorder.
Godly ambition creates an opposite ecosystem—one where humility becomes contagious. When leaders genuinely value others above themselves, trust flourishes because people feel seen, not used. Collaboration replaces competition as everyone works toward shared Kingdom purposes rather than personal kingdoms. Teams operate smoothly because ego isn’t sabotaging every decision. This Christ-like posture transforms workplaces into communities where love, not ambition, sets the tone. Be ambitious with a heart to bless, and you will be blessed in the process.
