He Tells Us of Things to Come

Written by Shana Schutte

Jesus wants to speak to you about what is to come.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 9, 2023

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  John 10:27

Five years ago, my husband, Clark, and I were living in Peoria, Illinois, where we had moved for Clark to accept a leadership position with an international radio ministry. When we relocated to Peoria, we were certain we would only be there short-term, so we decided not to purchase a house, but to rent instead. The Lord miraculously provided a home for us owned by a lovely Christian couple who had been called overseas for work just the day before we reached out to their real estate agent. During our rental negotiations, we learned we would live in their home for four to five years until they returned.

But that’s not what happened at all.

Two and a half years after living there, one day while cleaning the kitchen, a still, small voice pressed a message into my spirit: “You’re not going to be here as long as you think you are.”

This certainly sounded like the Lord for two reasons: the impression went against my assumptions about the future, and it also came out of nowhere. I was thinking about dirty dishes, not about moving. So, I wrote down what I had heard in my journal and prayed over it knowing that if it was the Lord that it would come to pass.

I also knew that the Lord speaks to us through the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 says:

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

Just a couple months later, just as the Lord had said, the couple who owned the home emailed Clark and said they were being called back to the United States earlier than anticipated and that we needed to move out.

What a gracious and loving Lord! Because He spoke to me and told me of things to come, three things happened:

First, I wasn’t afraid or shocked. I knew He was divinely in control and that our sudden move was not a surprise to Him. Therefore, I knew He would provide a new home for us. Fear did not enter my heart.

Next, because He had warned me about our unexpected move, my faith increased when it happened just as He said. In John 14:29, when Jesus was speaking to His disciples about His certain death and return, He said, “I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen that you will believe.”

Finally, I became overwhelmed with the care and love of the God who sees me—and you. We are never, ever alone. He knows what is coming. He is the all-knowing Lord who envelopes all

His plans for our lives in His sovereignty and gracious love.

Now, five years later, I am praying over more future changes—and I have written down words once more in my journal that came to me in an unexpected, still, small voice. I know that if the Lord spoke, what I heard will come to pass.

Rather than fret and worry, I am choosing each day to see life through His lens. He is in control. He loves my husband and me—and He is preparing a future that will increase our faith when it unfolds. I am asking Jesus to show up and surprise us so that we love Him more and He is glorified.

Jesus wants to speak to you about what is to come and about His love for you. He wants to surprise you and be glorified in your life. Press into the Lord and ask Him what He wants to say to you today.

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).

Prayer

Lord, how I praise you that you are present in my life and that you want to speak to me about your plans for my life. Please be glorified in my life. And Lord, I’m asking that you show up and surprise me! I love walking in faith and seeing you at work. Amen!

Application

Ask Jesus to speak to you about what He wants you to know. Then write what you sense down in a journal and pray over it.
