He is Never “Un-Blessing” You

Written by Shana Schutte

Even when it seems God is removing something from us, His goal is always to bless us.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 11, 2022

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

In 2016, my husband and I moved to Central Illinois from a small suburb of Chicago after a job change required us to relocate.

Because we didn’t know how long we would be in Illinois, we decided to rent a home, rather than buy. Unfortunately, there weren’t many residences to lease on the market. Then one afternoon, an idea popped into my mind, which we later learned was God orchestrating our steps.

“Hey!” I said to my husband. “What if I look online for houses that are for sale that we would purchase if we were going to buy, and see if any of the owners are open to leasing their home instead?” I called a couple realtors and God did a miracle.

He opened the door for us to occupy a beautiful home from a couple who had—just a couple days before—learned that they were being temporarily relocated by their employer overseas to Germany. Not confidentially, they wanted to rent their home while away, but their realtor told them that would never work, so they listed it for sale instead.

When I reached out to their realtor, all that changed. God was at work to answer their heart’s desire—and ours. The house was a huge blessing to us as we hosted many family members and friends, enjoyed a huge yard with our dog as well as a wonderful back porch where I was able to have my quiet time with Jesus.

We thought the owners would be gone three to five years, but a little over two years later, we learned we would need to move quickly as they were unexpectedly returning to the United States—and we didn’t know where we would go.

One day, as I considered our upcoming move, I thought, “The owners of this house blessed us, and now they are un-blessing us.” As quickly as I had that thought, I remembered that in Jesus, there are no “un-blessings.” Even when it seems God is removing something from us, His goal is always to bless us in some way, even if our idea of blessing doesn’t look like His.

The Lord never takes away something, shakes up something, shifts something or destroys something without a good, good plan. This is a hopeful reminder especially if we are facing uncertainty and aren’t sure if our tomorrow will be as good as today.

As it turned out, God was answering my years-long prayer for us to move back to Colorado. My husband and I had always wanted to live in the mountains, and Jesus placed us at almost 11,000 feet right in the Rockies where foxes, chipmunks, squirrels, bears, and moose visit us—and where I feel at home.

He knows best. When things get shaken up, or they change, remember He is at work in ways you can’t imagine—and He is never un-blessing you.

Prayer

Lord, help me to trust You with my life in every way. Even when things look bleak, you are never un-blessing me. Amen.

Application

Thank the Lord for the unexpected—and unwanted—changes in your life. Amen.
