“When everything seems like it’s falling apart or out of control, we put the full weight of our trust on the only One who can bear it and then live with hope.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 15, 2026
But if we hope for what we do not see, through perseverance we wait eagerly for it. Romans 8:25, NASB
I’m not a historian, but I’m sure I don’t know of a time like this ever before – when almost everyone seems to sense deeply that the world is broken. Disasters and crises don’t just seem to be, but are, increasing. I recently heard the leader of a global organization explain that armed conflict, natural disasters, famine, political unrest, along with diminishing compassion, are producing common, horrifying outputs.
Add to that a global increase in anxiety and depression since the COVID pandemic began. It’s understandable if you feel uncomfortable right now.
A couple of friends have said this thing to me recently, and it really surprised me to hear it, because I’d been feeling it myself: “It’s like God is pulling back a curtain and letting us see more of the brokenness in the world than we’ve ever seen, and it’s very hard to take.”
The Bible is not silent about our situation. The Apostle Paul wrote that “the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” But what is it? Why does the earth groan, and why are we so restless?
Well, this is not a perfect world. Our bodies decay here. Plants and animals, the whole earth decays. This is hard for us, because we were created for eternity, and we’re longing for that forever life we were made for, for the return of our Savior, and the adoption into God’s family that we were promised but can’t quite fully experience yet.
Things are happening in heaven. God is still working. But it’s so difficult to be patient, especially when it seems someone pressed the “up” button on the stress level of the whole world. But we don’t wait passively. There’s an important work of faith to do now. And because we live in a world that rewards sensationalism, we might miss it, because it’s a quiet work. But don’t miss it.
When everything seems like it’s falling apart or out of control, we put the full weight of our trust on the only One who can bear it and then live with hope. We wait in the hope that God’s promises are true – that Jesus will return, that Creation will be renewed, that perfect justice and mercy will be restored, that famine, natural disasters, and war will end, that we will be adopted into God’s family and live in perfect communion with God forever.
The Bible says He is keeping us, shielding us until the day we see our salvation realized and these promises come true. The work we do now is to believe it, hope in it, actively taking steps and making decisions based on our trust in God’s promises.
And, in our hope, we can rejoice about what awaits us, despite the emotional, cultural, or political climate. We can lift our eyes up and seek His face, because seeking him is rewarding and because there’s something good on the other side of our groaning.
It’s hard to wait, yes. “ But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” And even though we feel weak, the Spirit helps us pray, even when we don’t have the words and – for now – like Creation, can only groan.
Prayer
Jesus, I’m longing for your return. Father, help me to wait in hope and trust in you. Holy Spirit, thank You for interceding for me with groanings. One day, we will live in eternity together. Please hasten that day.
Application
Sing. If you think singing is not for you, do it anyway. The Bible commands it and singing gives voice to hope. Spend some time searching for hope-filled hymns or sing the song below. Sing about your hope to God. Sing about your hope in front of others. This is a spiritual service and an act of faith, and it’s so good for us.
