God’s Secret, Surprise Healing

Written by Shana Schutte

He is transforming and healing you.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 13, 2022

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Psalm 51:10

Perhaps like me, you’ve had wounded places in your heart where you’ve wondered if full deliverance will ever come. You know you need God’s perspective and truth to be set free. So, you’ve called out to Him; you’ve done the work; you’ve trusted Him to show you His truth, but healing has still been elusive.

One of my favorite verses is Ezekiel 36:26. God says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Notice that God says, “I will give.”

It’s as if He’s saying, “Child, no matter how hard you try, healing won’t be a gift you give yourself. You can’t do it alone by working your own way to emotional and spiritual wholeness. You won’t do it independently of Me because healing always happens within the context of relationship with me. This, Dear One, is going to be of me, and it will be my work. Then, when you’re healed, you’ll know that I am the God who loves and saves you.”

There were times in my past when I wondered if my heart would ever heal; it seemed as if God wasn’t doing a thing to help me get past my pain. Even though I did what I could to cooperate with God by seeking Him and investing in spiritual and personal growth, I was still stuck. There were clearly perspectives and beliefs I had that were wrong and so I couldn’t get past my hurt. But I didn’t know how to fix myself. I couldn’t fix myself, and it seemed like deliverance would never come. Can you relate? That’s how life must look to the bird who sits on her nest.

Things are apparently at a standstill. But the bird sits quietly, knowing that in the stillness something vital is going on and that in the proper time it will be shown. It takes faith and patience for the bird, and such faith and patience never seem to waiver, day after day, night after night, as she bides the appointed time.

Restless and doubtful, we wonder if the healing of our hearts will ever come, because we see no visible signs of progress. Let us remember the perfect egg, unchanged in its appearance from the day it’s laid. But as the bird faithfully waits, doing the thing that she’s supposed to do during those silent weeks, important things are happening and taking place.

And so it is with us. As we faithfully wait on God, doing what we’re supposed to do—choosing to trust Him, choosing to believe during the silent weeks, perhaps even months and years—God is remaking our hearts!

It’s as if the transformation and healing of our hearts is done in secret. How many times have I been clueless about His work in me until He revealed the finished product? Then, when I least expected it, He pulled back the curtain covering the place in my heart that was once wounded and exclaimed, “Look Child! See how I’ve healed you! Now you know it was all me.”

Many times God’s secret transforming work has moved me to my knees, to tears, to gratitude. Who else but God? Who else but my Savior? When we’re frustrated because we want to see more emotional or spiritual progress, and we want God to hurry up and mend our hearts, we can trust, believe, wait, rest. He is transforming us.

“And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live” (Deuteronomy 30:6).

Prayer

Father, thank you that you are at work, here and now, transforming and restoring in often unseen ways. Help me to rest in this truth today, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
