God Guides a Humble Heart

Written by Boyd Bailey

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 10, 2019

He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. Psalm 25:9

Pride sends a person the wrong way, while humility accompanies a person in the right direction. Pride blinds people to eventually make their way to hell with the devil, while humility sets a heart on course with Christ to heaven. Humility is a spiritual sherpa who can be totally trusted and leads to life, but pride is a deceptive guide who leads to death. Pride leads to moral poverty, while humility leads to the riches of God’s grace. A humble person desires God’s way to be her way.

Thankfully, as we are willing to listen and learn from His Word and from His Spirit’s instruction, the Lord teaches us His way. We are wise not to trust ourselves, but to totally trust God’s divine guidance. Because His ways are not our ways, we seek the Spirit’s discernment, before we determine the best course of action. The gospel is God’s baseline for His will. In the light of how Christ loves is how we love. His ways become our ways when we humbly follow Jesus.

“Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding the truth from those who think themselves so wise, and for revealing it to little children” (Matthew 11:25).

Has your faith remained humble and childlike? Or, have you become wise in your own eyes with no need for others? An isolated faith is set up for failure, but a faith engaged in community with other Jesus followers is set up for success. Alone we can not atone for our sin, so alone we cannot keep ourselves from sin. We need Jesus and Jesus lovers to save us from our sins and to save us from ourselves. A humble heart is not childish, but childlike in its total trust in Christ.

Are you facing a daunting decision? If so, let the Lord teach you in the way you should go. What does His Word say to your mind and His Spirit say to your heart? Get quiet, so the noise of nonsense is flushed from your faith. Ask the Lord to guide you in your growth. Invite the Spirit to expand your capacity to be loved and to love. Grow in mercy to see others with a heart of compassion, not judgment. Expand your generous living to a diversity of cultures. Humble yourself under God’s hand and He will guide you in what is right and teach you His way. Like a compass in the wilderness, so a humble heart He will direct toward the wise way.

“A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way” (Proverbs 20:24).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, grow my heart of humility to learn from you, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Application

Is pride leading me to self sufficiency or is humility harnessing a selfless heart?
