Generous Hospitality

Written by Boyd Bailey

God blesses what we have when given to Him for His purposes.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 25, 2023

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:7

As told in the Gospel of Luke, the Christmas story paints a picture of humble beginnings. Amidst the bustling town of Bethlehem, an innkeeper found himself unexpectedly approached by a weary couple seeking shelter. This narrative, though brief, resonates profoundly with the themes of generosity, hospitality, and the simple yet profound role of the innkeeper in the birth of Jesus. The businessman, likely inundated with guests due to the census (think Taylor Swift concert in town), had no grand accommodations to offer Mary and Joseph. Yet, recognizing their need, he didn’t turn them away. His generosity and compassion shone through as he provided them with what little space he had available—a humble stable. Within these modest surroundings, the Savior of the world entered into humanity. God blesses what we have when given to Him for His purposes. What seems meager may glorify the Lord the most.

What looks to be an insignificant gift of this seemingly minor character in the Nativity story, the innkeeper’s act of kindness emphasizes the providential arrangement of God’s plan unfolding in the most unassuming circumstances. In this simple act of providing shelter, the kind entrepreneur unknowingly played a pivotal role in fulfilling ancient prophecies. He welcomed the birth of the long-awaited Messiah, showcasing a heart willing to extend hospitality and care even in the most meager of settings. What a beautiful expression of generous resourcefulness in a hard situation.

The innkeeper’s example resonates profoundly with the church’s teachings regarding the importance of hospitality and generosity. Martin Luther, for instance, stressed the Christian duty of helping our neighbors in need, emphasizing that even the smallest acts of kindness reflect Christ’s love. The businessman’s generosity echoes the spirit of Christ’s teachings, emphasizing the value of selflessness and compassion. His provision of a stable, though a simple gesture, showcased a heart open to serving others and meeting their needs, embodying the essence of following Jesus. Your capacity may seem full, but ask the Lord for other creative alternatives. Like the innkeeper, look beyond traditional means to innovative ideas that may actually be better.

Your selfless gesture could be part of the fulfillment of God’s plan, demonstrating that no act of kindness done in the name of love goes unnoticed in God’s sight. As you celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas, reflect on being generous with who you are and what you have. By God’s grace, emulate a spirit of hospitality and selflessness, opening your hearts to extend kindness and care to those in need. In doing so, you follow in the footsteps of the innkeeper, welcoming Christ into your life through acts of love and generosity towards others. Instead of telling someone a blunt no, consider a “not right now” or offer alternatives of other relationships or resources that may even be superior. Use warm hospitality to invite Jesus and all those who need His love.

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:25).

Heavenly Father, show me your creative heart of generosity when I feel like I have nothing to offer to others in need through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name.
