“As you cling to Him, you’ll begin to see the treasures He’s hidden in the very storm you thought would break you.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 24, 2025
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
As a young girl I used to have a great fear of thunderstorms. When a storm would roll through, I can remember being so afraid I would climb into bed and pull the covers over my head. Thankfully, as I grew up, I was able to give that fear over to the Lord and no longer hide under the covers! Yet, there are situations that occur in life much like a violent thunderstorm crashing around us – unexpected, loud, and unsettling circumstances. The winds of disappointment, the rain of heartache, the thunder of fear – all of it can leave us feeling tossed, broken, and uncertain of where to turn. But even in the midst of the storm, God is near. He doesn’t just help us survive the winds. He uses them to bring about something beautiful. Something lasting. Something eternal.
In Mark 4:39, Jesus stood in a boat with His terrified disciples and spoke to the raging storm: “Peace, be still.” And just like that, the winds ceased and the waves calmed. Yet what may be even more powerful than the stilling of the storm was what the disciples gained from the storm – a deeper understanding of who Jesus was. They saw His power. They saw His presence. They learned to trust Him in ways they never had before. That was their treasure.
Maybe your life doesn’t look like you thought it would by now. Maybe you’re looking around and wondering how you got here or why certain dreams haven’t yet come to pass. But God isn’t finished with your story. Often, He takes us on a winding, unexpected route – not to confuse us, but to grow us. He allows the storm so we’ll discover things we couldn’t have known in calm waters.
It’s like when I’ve been walking along the shoreline after a storm and spot a perfect seashell lying in the sand – whole, unmarred, and beautiful. How did it survive the crashing waves? And yet, there it is, waiting to be discovered. That’s how the Lord works. Out of the chaos, He brings forth treasures – refined character, deeper faith, unexpected blessings, and new opportunities.
If today finds you weary, confused, or afraid, cry out to the One who calms the sea. He will come to you. He will walk with you. And as you cling to Him, you’ll begin to see the treasures He’s hidden in the very storm you thought would break you.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:2-3).
Prayer
Father God, help me trust you in the storm. Show me the treasures you’ve placed along the way, and calm my heart with your peace as only you can.
Application
If you’re walking through a storm right now, take a few quiet moments and ask God to walk alongside you. Ask him to walk alongside you, and give you the strength to endure until you find the treasures along the path.
