“God has ordained the changing seasons of your life.“
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 2, 2025
For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
Yesterday, as I crunched along the paths of our leaf-littered woods, I stopped to listen to the hauntingly beautiful sound of a flock of geese flying over, making their way south to their wintering home. It filled me with wonder to think how God has placed a guiding wisdom in those birds, prompting them of the exact time to take to the air as the season changes. God has ordained the seasons in nature, but He has also ordained seasons of the soul and of human life. Better even than animal instincts, He has given us the Holy Spirit whose winds direct us in and out of changing seasons. But have we forgotten how to listen? Are we so attuned to the world’s ways and expectations that we no longer hear His still, small voice behind us saying, “This is the way you shall go; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21)?
My personal season of life is centered around mothering small, very needy babies and children. It seems clear enough that my job right now is to nurture and disciple these little ones; but so often, fear creeps in that I ought to be doing more. I compare myself to others and feel that I too ought to be starting up a business, serving on that committee, starting that workout regime, chasing that lifelong dream, etc. In those moments, I need the wisdom of the Ecclesiastes writer to remind me that there is a time and season for everything. You and I were not made to do all things and be all things all of the time. In this season, my calling is to put down deep, slow-growing roots into the soil of my children’s hearts, and that means not doing all the other things I might. Because if there’s one thing the geese and the falling leaves remind me, it’s that seasons change. This one will not last forever. In no time at all, this precious time will have flown by. Am I taking time now to savour the goodness and the lessons of this season? When I look back, will I rejoice that I invested myself fully and faithfully in it?
I wonder what season you are in right now? Advent is a season in which all believers are invited to slow down and quiet our souls as we wait upon the coming Lord Jesus. As we wait, let us attune our hearts to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Consider the migrating geese. Lean in and listen as he faithfully guides you onward, season by season.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, teach me to hear and heed your voice as you guide me in this season of my life. Take away the fear of missing out and give me confidence to invest fully in the work that you give me in this season, for the glory of Jesus. Amen.
Application
Ask the Spirit to make clear what faithfulness looks like for you in your unique season of life. What ambitions or activities might you need to let go of, or re-commit to?
