“Delight in the Lord and trust Him to give you the desires of your heart—Oh how He loves!”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 10, 2022
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
Delight is such an attractive, rock-solid word. Like the Washington Monument it stands erect pointing to the heavens for all to admire and move closer toward. Yes, delight has a majestic feel, attractive and quieting to the soul. Delight offers a high degree of pleasure, a more permanent state of mind and heart than even joy, which expires in time. When we say we are delighted in a person, situation, opportunity or accomplishment we are deeply and gratefully fulfilled. We are content and at rest with a cheerful disposition, as we celebrate the good fruit of its tasty delights.
David, eyes diming with age, could see clearly that the key to an abundant life was to delight in the Lord. Sadly, his son did not learn from his dad. Solomon experienced the futility of seeking delight in possessions, so his view of life was meaningless—void of true riches and fulfillment. Yes! Delighting in God is like gazing up at a full moon on a clear night. Starry distractions lose their twinkle and clouds are swept away by the peace and calm of a brilliant full moon. David knew the seductive allure of fame, conquests in sex and war, and the distractions of affluence. But true lasting satisfaction and pleasure came from delighting in His Creator, the giver of life that is truly life.
“In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:19).
What does it meant to delight in the Lord? A delight commissioned by the Lord is Christ-centric. Our old self lost when we were found by faith in Jesus, and our new self—life in Christ, won over our affections. So, to delight in the Lord is to starve our fleshly appetites: sin, selfish desires and earthy attractions. To feed our spiritual appetites we need silence, solitude, service, soulwinning and to live our lives led by eternity in our hearts. Delight in the Lord sets a heart aflame in love!
What are some indicators that you are delighting in the Lord? Your worship is high and lifted up to the King of Glory in praise, adoration and thanksgiving. You gladly submit to your reigning sovereign and savior Jesus. Your prayers are punctuated with passionate pleas for souls slumbering in sin outside of the life-giving grace of God. Your service is a delight and your delight is to serve. Your love for God, yourself and others is robust and growing in intimacy. Delight in the Lord and trust Him to give you the desires of your heart—Oh how He loves!
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:1-3).

Heavenly Father, grow my delights into what delights you, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.
