Daily Bread

Written by Boyd Bailey

Leverage your dependency on the Lord as a model to lead others to love the Lord more than their life.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – July 20, 2022

Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty or riches, but give me only my daily bread. Proverbs 30:8

Why is it necessary for the follower of Jesus Christ to focus his faith on daily bread? One compelling reason is it defines our dependency on Him. It is the intuitive need to keep our soul empty of sin’s enticements– lies, laziness and greed, and our body full of food– daily bread. Jesus taught His disciples to pray this way, “Give us today our daily bread. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:11, 13).

Can we really make it successfully through life without the Lord’s loving leadership, compassionate comfort, and wise rebukes? Of course not! A life left un-tethered from holy reliance is aimless and only interested in fulfilling fleshy desires the world’s way. In contrast, a man or woman with an appetite for the Almighty “hungers and thirsts for righteousness” (Matthew 5:5). There is an innate passion–born at regeneration–to engage every day with a prayerful posture of dependency on your Provider in heaven.

“I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread” (Job 23:10).

Your dispenser of daily bread is totally trustworthy with a track record of giving to His children all that they need. Are you content with Christ’s daily provisions? Or do you still struggle with wanting to prescribe to the Lord your wants and wishes? Peace comes when you receive His prescriptions for living and leave the unknowns in His hands. His part is to give daily bread and your part is to gratefully receive His daily bread.

When you live in-between affliction and riches you live in an authentic position to serve others. Most people can relate to your life when you are transparent about your own struggles, fears and successes. Leverage your dependency on the Lord as a model to lead others to love the Lord more than their life. Daily bread nourishes your soul with love to serve others.

It is your need for His daily bread that deepens your faith and broadens your influence. Wake up each day grateful for God’s goodness and the glory of His provisions. Perhaps you ask yourself these two questions. Am I satisfied with His daily bread? Do I daily feed off of faith in Jesus and faithful living? His daily bread deepens your dependency on Him. Jesus describes Himself as the bread of life (John 6:48). Charles Spurgeon beautifully describes the process of feasting on Jesus the Bread of Life:

“It is of the utmost importance to those of you who have spiritual life that you should feed upon, the Lord Jesus. It is well to know everything that is revealed, for every word of God is good, and has its uses, and all Scripture is profitable; but the daily household bread, the substantial meat on which we must be nourished if we would grow strong for God and holiness, is Christ himself. “I am that bread of life.” We do not get bread anywhere else save in Jesus our Lord. We may find certain minor things apart from him: flavorings, ornaments, and furniture of the table we may get from some other hand; but the bread, the real solid meat, the essence is Christ himself.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, grow my appetite for you and your Word. May I feast often and be satisfied at your table of thanksgiving for your son Jesus, the Bread of Life, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.

Application

How can I include in my daily routine feeding on God’s Word and resting in my love relationship with Jesus?
