Count it All Joy

Written by Martha Wilson

The Lord allows the trials and the gifts, all for the benefit of His children.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 28, 2025

In the middle of the trial, we must know that God knows something we don’t know. Trust Him.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4, NKJV

Amazon delivered a box to my front steps, but I hadn’t ordered anything. The name and address were correct, so I opened it, only to find something I’d never use. I quickly contacted Amazon for return instructions. They had no explanation but told me it was mine to keep. Thanks, but no thanks. I definitely don’t need any more junk.

Trials often arrive unannounced and are definitely unwanted. Trials come in all shapes, sizes, and weights. You wouldn’t open the box if you knew what was inside, but would immediately drop it off at the nearest return center. No one willingly orders a trial, especially not one stacked right on top of another.

James wrote the words: “Count it all joy when you find yourself enveloped in various trials.” What kind of rose-colored glasses did he wear? He isn’t calling us to do a happy dance in the middle of hard times. Instead, he urges us to see that the result is joy because the trial is meant to produce patience, perseverance, endurance, and steadfastness. If we don’t allow it to complete its work in us, the outcome can be anger, disappointment, bitterness, or murmuring.

Instead of zooming in on the trial, I am practicing focusing on God and His promises, which reveal the truth to me. I remind myself of what I know to be true about God.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28, NIV).

When the box of trials arrives, we must remember that God knows something we don’t. Beneath all the pain, struggle, and darkness, there are treasures that can never be taken away.

We must know:

– He is conforming me to the image of Christ.

– He is good, and all that He does is good.

– He is working all things together for good.

– He is for me, not against me.

Prayer

Lord, give me the grace to count it all joy because I know you are producing in me precisely what I need for the days ahead.
