“In life’s common moments, God is inviting us into his eternal work.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 18, 2025
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9
In my living room, I have a large framed botanical print of a dandelion. Visitors to my home often make snide remarks such as, “Nice picture of a weed.” And I smile, because that is exactly why I love the dandelion. It is indeed a common weed, a perennial nuisance to lawn-keepers everywhere. And yet, if you stop and consider it in its intricacy, the dandelion is an amazing specimen of God’s handiwork, from root to lion-tooth leaf to the wispy little seeds that float away when a child makes a wish and blows them into the breeze (to plant a hundred new dandelions in the lawn). If only more of us could embrace dandelions, we’d find our gardens strewn with golden goodness that we did not even have to plant.
But the reason the dandelion speaks so poignantly to me is that it daily reminds me to find beauty in life’s weeds – the common things, the nuisances, yes, even the messes. As a mother to young children, I need the daily reminder that God is at work in those messy, common moments. I need the rallying call not to grow weary, but to press on in doing the good work God has given me to do, and to remember that all these real-life, messy, weed-ridden moments are producing a harvest.
I suspect that when Paul wrote his admonishment to the Galatians, he was preaching as much to himself as to his audience. The Galatians were a messy bunch, quick to buy into false doctrines and slow to mature. Yet Paul endured with the love of a parent for his little child in the hope that God would in time produce in them the fruit of the Spirit.
When you find yourself battling the weeds – the messes, the noise and disorder, the human nature – of your home and the people in it, consider the dandelion. As the writer of Proverbs aptly puts it, “Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests” (Proverbs 14:4). Ask the Lord to help you to see the beauty in the weeds – the precious gift of a garden of messy human souls to tend and a harvest to joyfully anticipate.
Prayer
Father, thank you for the people and the place you’ve given me to care for. It is messy work, but you are the God who makes messy things beautiful. Give me eyes to see the beauty of each moment, and may I not grow weary of doing good. Amen.
Application
When tempted to rail against the weeds in your home life this week, pause and give God thanks for the good work he’s given you to do. Then take a deep breath and carry on!
