“God often uses others to lift our weary hands and strengthen our faith.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 31, 2026
When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat down on it. Then Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other so that his hands remained steady. Exodus 17:12
It was one of those weeks. We’d just found out we were to fly in one week to collect our new baby son in India. With mountains of preparations, the two children at home got sick and needed every spare moment, the kitchen had to be demolished due to a mold issue, and the dog got injured. What else could go wrong? More importantly, how would God see us through this chaotic mess and enable us to do the important things we needed to do?
The answer came in the shape of our friends. As our requests for prayer went out, their offers to help flowed in – to help with the children, to bring meals, to loan clothing for the trip, and on and on. The proud, independent part of me wanted to politely assure my friends that we could manage; they need not trouble themselves. But, finally reaching the end of myself, I knew this was the Lord’s provision, and if I wanted his help, I had to humble myself to accept the help of his people.
There are no lone rangers in God’s Kingdom. When God told Moses that the battle depended on his arms remaining aloft, he never meant for Moses to bear that burden alone. God knew he needed others to hold up his hands for him. As Christians, we are part of Christ’s Body, and that requires humility, the humility to admit that we cannot function in isolation. Too often, we associate humility with shame or failure, but we forget that it was Christ who set the example when he humbled himself. To be humble is to recognise we are, by God’s good design, human (“of the earth”). The glory of humanity shines when we, weak and needy, serve one another as Christ has served us. And yes, that means accepting the service of others as well as giving it.
Praise God for his provision through vessels of clay! Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Likewise, as we receive the gifts of help and hospitality from our brothers and sisters, we receive from the hands of Christ himself.
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I am poor and needy. Please help me to receive the provision you give through the generosity of others with humility and gratitude. Thank you for the way you work through your Body, the Church. Amen.
Application
Community is God’s design for caring for his people. What is one way you can provide for someone in your community? What is one need you can ask someone to help you with?
