Aging with Wisdom and Trust

Written by Pat Elsberry

Wisdom in aging isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about standing in faith when the answers aren’t clear.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 1, 2025

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

There comes a point in life when the roles begin to shift. You may find yourself helping aging parents navigate doctors’ appointments, memory lapses, and the slow fade of independence. Or perhaps it’s your spouse—your lifelong partner—who now needs care, patience, and attention in ways you never expected. These seasons of change can be disorienting. You look around and realize: life is different, and your heart wrestles with that difference.

If you’re anything like me, you may try to build a cocoon of safety around your loved one, doing everything in your power to protect them from falls or illness. But at some point, a sobering truth rises to the surface: you are not in control. You never truly were. As much as you love, plan, and protect, you cannot stop time or the effects of aging.

And that truth can be both humbling and freeing.

God is in control. He has numbered our days, just as He has counted every hair on our heads (Matthew 10:30). He ordained our birth, and He alone knows the moment of our homegoing. That truth doesn’t dismiss our care or concern – it anchors it in something greater. We care, not as those who must control the outcome, but as those who trust the One who holds all outcomes.

So, how do we walk wisely in this season? With open hands and steady hearts. We do our best to surrender the fear that drives us to micromanage. We release the anxiety that steals our joy. We lean into the promise of Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Wisdom in aging isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about standing in faith when the answers aren’t clear. It’s about choosing peace over panic, presence over perfection. It’s about cherishing each day for the gift that it is, knowing that God’s grace is sufficient, even here.

If you find yourself in this place in life right now, remember this – you don’t walk this road alone. God walks with you—faithful, steady, and sure. Trust Him in the change. He’s already gone ahead.

“He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age” (Ruth 4:15).

Prayer

Lord, I confess that change is hard and aging can feel overwhelming. But I believe you are sovereign over it all. Help me to trust you, not just with my future, but with the futures of those I love. Let your peace guard my heart, and let your wisdom guide my steps.

Application

If you see yourself in this stage of life perhaps reach out to others who are on the same path. It’s so helpful to walk through life with friends who are on a similar journey.
